Honest comparison
MarleyDesk vs Jackrabbit
Jackrabbit Class is the market leader in dance studio software. MarleyDesk is the challenger built around the complaints Jackrabbit's own users post publicly. Here's the honest version of that matchup.
The short version: Jackrabbit has been serving class-based businesses for roughly two decades and has the deepest feature set in the category. If you need every feature today, it's the safe pick. MarleyDesk is new — we're onboarding our founding studios now — and it exists because three specific Jackrabbit pain points kept showing up in owners' own words: parent login friction, payment failures that surface weeks late, and per-student billing that counts students who already left.
| What matters | MarleyDesk | Jackrabbit |
|---|---|---|
| Parent sign-in | Passwordless — parents tap an email link and stay signed in for 30 days. Nothing for your front desk to reset. | Password-based parent portal; forgotten passwords route through your staff. |
| Failed payments | Parent is notified immediately with a self-serve way to fix it. Invoice statuses never show "paid" unless money actually arrived. | Owners report ACH payments that showed as accepted, then turned out denied weeks later, with no notification. |
| Pricing model | Flat monthly price per studio. Inactive students can't cost you anything. | Priced by student count. Their own pricing page states fees are calculated on total students "including active & inactive students," with archiving families offered as the way to keep fees down. |
| Parent app | Mobile-first web portal included — any phone, nothing to install, no extra charge. | A branded mobile app has been offered as a paid add-on (around $93/month plus setup at the time of writing — check their current pricing). |
| Recitals | Recital ticketing is on our roadmap, timed to our founding studios' recital season. | Recital and costume features exist today, though owners report gaps in the recital module. |
| Track record | New. Two to three founding studios, direct founder access, white-glove migration. | ~20 years in market, thousands of class-based businesses. |
The password problem
Every "I can't get into the portal" call lands on your front desk — usually during warm-up. Jackrabbit's portal uses traditional accounts and passwords. MarleyDesk removed the password entirely: parents get a sign-in link by email and stay signed in on their own phone for 30 days. There is nothing to forget and nothing for your staff to reset.
The silent-failure problem
The most damaging complaint we found in public Jackrabbit reviews: a payment shows as accepted, and weeks later the owner discovers it was denied — after the dancer kept attending. MarleyDesk was designed against this failure mode specifically. A payment is never marked paid until funds are confirmed, a failure notifies the parent the moment it happens with a self-serve retry, and every money event is recorded permanently, so the answer to "what happened with this invoice?" is always one click away.
The growth-tax problem
This one isn't an inference from reviews — it's on Jackrabbit's own pricing page. Fees are calculated from your total student count "including active & inactive students," where inactive means not enrolled in any class. Their suggested remedy is to archive departed families yourself, which makes housekeeping a line item on your bill: forget to prune, and you pay for dancers who left seasons ago. Studio owners have been describing exactly that in public reviews for years.
MarleyDesk charges one flat monthly price per studio. There is no student count to audit, so there is no housekeeping to forget. See how our pricing works.
When Jackrabbit is the right choice
Honestly: if you run a large multi-program operation that needs skills tracking, costume management, deep reporting, and a recital module today, Jackrabbit's maturity wins. MarleyDesk is deliberately narrow right now — daily operations done right — and broadening with our founding studios. If you need everything at once, we're not your pick yet. If your week is consumed by portal calls, billing surprises, and a bill that grows faster than your studio, we built MarleyDesk for you.
Switching is not a project
MarleyDesk imports families, students, and enrollments from a Jackrabbit CSV export — and for founding studios, we do the migration with you, white-glove. Also compare MarleyDesk vs Studio Pro and MarleyDesk vs The Studio Director.
Leaving the growth tax behind?
We're onboarding two to three founding studios for the 2026–27 season — migration done together, founding pricing locked for as long as you stay.
