Honest comparison

MarleyDesk vs The Studio Director

The Studio Director is the quiet incumbent — twenty years old, well-rated, and running more studios than most owners realize. MarleyDesk is the challenger built around the two things its own reviewers wish were different: the parent portal and the pricing model.

The short version: The Studio Director (part of EverCommerce since 2020, and a different product from Studio Pro) earns real praise: free responsive support, automatic tuition computation, and the deepest costume and recital tooling in the category. But its parent portal is a dated email-and-password site with no parent app, its pricing is tiered by student count — so growth raises your bill — and its interface draws steady criticism across a decade of reviews. MarleyDesk is new, onboarding founding studios now, and was designed against exactly those trade-offs.

What mattersMarleyDeskThe Studio Director
Parent sign-inPasswordless — parents tap an email link and stay signed in for 30 days. No accounts to create, no duplicates possible.Email + password portal accounts; their own help docs warn parents about accidentally creating duplicate accounts.
Parent mobile experienceMobile-first web portal — identical on iPhone and Android, nothing to install. No parent-facing iOS app at the time of writing; reviewers report parents struggling with the mobile site. A branded app is a paid third-party add-on.
Pricing modelOne flat price per studio — enrollment growth never raises the bill.Tiered by student count (published at $65/mo up to 100 students, $119/mo at 101–250, up to $329/mo; the cheaper $39+ tier requires their payment processing).
Billing clarityStatuses never say "paid" until money arrived; parents get an immediate, itemized notice on every charge and failure, with self-serve recovery.Auto-tuition is praised, but reviewers report payment splits misreporting, discounts not updating automatically, and parents not receiving itemized payment confirmations.
Recitals & costumesRecital ticketing on our roadmap, timed to founding studios' recital season.Mature costume sizing with vendor charts and recital ticketing today — a genuine strength.
Track recordNew. Two to three founding studios, direct founder access, white-glove migration.~20 years in market, strong overall ratings, historically well-loved support.

The password portal problem

We looked at The Studio Director's live parent portal: it's a classic email-and-password login with a "Forgot Your Password?" flow, on a visibly dated page. Every forgotten password and every accidentally duplicated account becomes a call to your front desk — and their own support docs acknowledge the duplicate-account trap. MarleyDesk removed the failure mode entirely: parents tap a sign-in link in their email and stay signed in on their own phone for 30 days. There is nothing to forget and nothing to reset.

Growth shouldn't raise your software bill

The Studio Director prices by student count. By their published tiers, a studio that grows from 100 to 101 students jumps from $65 to $119 a month on the software-only plan — an 83% increase for one enrollment. The discounted tier gets cheaper only if you also commit to their payment processing. MarleyDesk charges one flat price per studio, whatever your enrollment does — see how our pricing works.

Billing parents never have to question

Reviewers genuinely like that tuition computes automatically — and then describe payment splits that don't show up right, discounts that don't recalculate, and parents who never get an itemized confirmation of what was charged. MarleyDesk treats billing trust as the product: every invoice shows its true status, every charge and failure notifies the parent immediately with the exact line items, and every money event is recorded permanently.

The interface, across a decade of reviews

Read The Studio Director's public reviews end to end and one theme recurs more than any other: the interface is clunky, the click counts are high, and things are hard to find — a complaint that shows up steadily from 2016 right through 2024, including from reviewers who otherwise rate it five stars. After a 2024 redesign, one reviewer described routine tasks taking twice as long. "Mature and stable" is real, but so is twenty years of accumulated workflow.

When The Studio Director is the right choice

Honestly: if costume management and recital ticketing are the center of your operation, The Studio Director does today what we've only scheduled. Its support is free and historically excellent, owners who don't consider themselves computer-savvy find it approachable, and its overall ratings are strong. If your studio runs on those strengths and your families tolerate the portal, staying is defensible. If the portal, the parent experience, and the per-student bill are the things wearing on you, that's what we rebuilt. Also compare MarleyDesk vs Jackrabbit and MarleyDesk vs Studio Pro.

Switching is genuinely easy here

Credit where due: The Studio Director is month-to-month with no contract lock-in, and most of its data exports to Excel. That means moving to MarleyDesk is a clean CSV import of your families, students, and enrollments — and for founding studios, we do the migration with you, white-glove.

Keep the growth. Lose the growth tax.

We're onboarding two to three founding studios for the 2026–27 season — migration done together from your Studio Director exports, founding pricing locked for as long as you stay.
